Natural Products for Osteoarthritis Pain

September 28, 2020   |   Evidence in Integrative Healthcare

September is Pain Awareness Month, highlighting the most common reason patients visit their health care providers including integrative health (IH) providers, e.g., acupuncturist, chiropractor, massage therapist, naturopath. One of the more common conditions resulting in pain, especially for our aging population is osteoarthritis. This is the most common type of arthritis and there is significant interest identifying natural products as treatment options for this condition.  An excellent resource of the most up to date information for consumers and health professionals on some of the more commonly recommended products for osteoarthritis pain is the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). This branch of the National Institute of Health (NIH) has taken a look at glucosamine, chondroitin, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), arnica, comfrey, capsicum, to name a few of these products.  To take a closer look at these and other evidence based options for osteoarthritis pain, visit the NCCIH at https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/osteoarthritis-in-depth?nav=govd.
