Vitamin D both decreases auto-immune response and increases myelin sheath regeneration in MS patients. Auto-immune disorders trick the body into attacking its’ own cells. In the case of MS, the myelin sheath is slowly destroyed, causing absent nerve transmissions and eventual loss of motor function. Research at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom have shown slowing of this degeneration and re-myelination with use of Vitamin D. In addition, low Vitamin D has been associated with the onset of MS.
